Dumbbell Step Ups.

The dumbbell step up drives one leg to stand up onto a raised platform while holding dumbbells. The height of the box sets the difficulty, and done strictly it builds powerful single leg strength with real carryover to athletics.

/How to perform

Step by step.

  1. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your sides and stand facing a box or bench.

  2. Place one whole foot flat on the platform, heel included. This is the start.

  3. Drive through the working leg to stand up onto the box, keeping the trailing leg passive.

  4. Stand tall on top, then lower under control back to the floor with the same leg.

  5. Tap the floor lightly and repeat, finishing all reps before switching legs.

  6. Avoid pushing off the bottom foot to bounce yourself up.

/Coach's note

The cheat on step ups is so common that most people never really do the exercise. The instant you push off the trailing foot on the floor to launch yourself up, the working leg stops working and you are just hopping. Plant the whole foot on the box, kill the bottom leg, and drive up with the top leg alone. If you cannot, the box is too high or the dumbbells too heavy. A strict step up is humbling, and it should be.

Box height is the difficulty dial, so set it deliberately. A higher box means a deeper bend in the working leg and a bigger range, which hits the glutes and quads harder but asks for more mobility and control. A knee height box, thigh starting around parallel, is a solid default. Go so high that you have to lean way forward or push off to clear it and you have given back the strictness you were after.

Control the way down, never just fall off. Lowering yourself softly to the floor with the working leg trains the muscle on the descent and roughly doubles the value of each rep. Drop off the box like a stair and you hand half the rep back. Make the lower as deliberate as the rise.

The payoff is real single leg power that carries to sprinting and jumping, right alongside the bulgarian split squat and dumbbell lunges. Keep it strict for 8 to 12 reps a leg, straps on if your grip quits before your legs do.

Common questions.

Keep the trailing foot passive and drive up using only the leg on the box. Most people push off the bottom foot to launch themselves, which turns it into a hop and removes the work from the target leg. If you cannot rise without that push, lower the box or the weight until the working leg can do it alone.

A knee height box, where your working thigh starts around parallel, is a solid default. A higher box increases the range and hits the glutes and quads harder but needs more mobility and control. Avoid a box so tall you have to lean forward or push off to clear it, since that reintroduces the cheat you are trying to avoid.

Control it. Lowering yourself softly back to the floor with the working leg trains the muscle on the descent and roughly doubles the value of each rep. Dropping or stepping off the box throws that half away. Make the lowering as deliberate as the rise, tapping the floor lightly before the next rep.

They build single leg strength and power with strong carryover to sprinting and jumping, since driving up onto a box mimics athletic push off. Alongside moves like the Bulgarian split squat and dumbbell lunges, they round out single leg training.
